North Little Rock Wastewater

Operations

The NLRW Operations Team is formed of 17 licensed professionals with diverse skillsets and experience levels. Together, they are responsible for operating, repairing, and maintaining our four water reclamation facilities (WRFs) and one solar power plant. This department also installs, maintains, and expands the Utility’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system (SCADA). During weekends, holidays, inclement weather, and after-hours, this department serves as the command post for the Utility. They are responsible for receiving and documenting emergency service requests, as well as dispatching emergency sewer services.

Treatment Process

At our four treatment facilities, we employ cutting-edge technologies and processes to treat wastewater effectively. Our treatment procedures remove contaminants and impurities, ensuring that the water released back into the environment meets or exceeds regulatory standards.

Treatment Plants

Faulkner Lake Plant

This 12-million-gallons-per-day plant is the most advanced of NLRW’s four treatment facilities and requires oversight by a Class IV Wastewater Operator.  Faulkner Lake’s treatment process includes mechanical screening, primary clarification, complete mix activated sludge, secondary clarification, disinfection, and biosolids handling.  Most of the Operations staff are based out of this facility.  Depending on projects or other tasks at hand, operators are dispatched from here to the other facilities.

Five Mile Creek Plant

This 6.6-million-gallons-per-day plant is operated by a single primary plant operator with a Class III Wastewater Operator license. Five Mile’s treatment process includes mechanical screening, partially mixed facultative lagoons, and disinfection.  In addition to the wastewater reclamation facility, the property also houses our 850.5 kW solar power plant.

White Oak Plant

This 8.5-million-gallons-per-day plant is similar to the Five Mile Creek Plant; it is operated by a single primary plant operator with a Class III Wastewater Operator license. The treatment process includes mechanical screening, partially mixed facultative lagoons, and disinfection.

Maumelle Plant

This 3.5-million-gallons-per-day plant is operated by two licensed Class III Wastewater Operators.  Due to more advanced treatment processes, it is overseen by a Class IV Wastewater operator in the same manner as the Faulkner Lake Plant.  Maumelle’s treatment process includes mechanical screening grinding, conventional activated sludge, secondary clarification, and disinfection.

Solar Power Plant

In 2020, we contracted Scenic Hill Solar to design and build an 850.5-kilowatt solar power plant on the Five Mile Creek Treatment Plant campus. Construction was completed in 2021, and, ever since then, it has generated 1.37 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, providing 20% of the electricity consumed by the Five Mile Creek Treatment Plant.
